Implementation Strategies for LEED 2009 Green Buildings
   Operations and Maintenance Program

This course is not simply an overview or introductory course about the LEED for Green Buildings Operations and Maintenance® (LEED O&M) program but an in-depth probe into the system that will leave participants with many ideas for immediate implementation whether they choose to enter the LEED O&M program or not.  It will also provide a roadmap of the certification process for those who are considering the program and want to better understand the costs, the timeline, the implementation steps, the work involved and the anticipated benefits.

Three Learning Objectives:

  • Participants will learn the benefits, costs and implementation strategies for the LEED O&M program so that they will be able to return to their facilities with ideas on how to implement at least one new strategy that will improve their organization’s operational performance.

  • When an organization is ready to measure and implement more strategies, participants will have a roadmap of the process of implementing and seeking certification for LEED O&M best practices.

  • Each participant will have an opportunity to share their experiences and learn from others who are seeking new ways to measure and realize operational performance for their organizations.

The instructor request that participants bring real life situations or questions from the field so that the group will have the opportunity to collaborate and apply concepts to relevant challenges of the day.

  Speaker: Phaedra Svec

Phaedra is an architect and sustainability consultant who has been working with LEED since the very first version of the system in 2000. She has been a national and regional consultant on projects such as: the NIST Report for Montana State University (LEED Pilot, & birth of Living Building concept); the David and Lucile Packard Foundation Sustainability Report and Matrix in Los Altos, California (beginning of the Living Building Challenge framework); the School of Nursing for the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston (LEED Gold), the Lewis and Clark State Office Building in Jefferson City, Missouri (LEED Platinum); The IRS facility in Kansas City, Missouri (LEED Certified); and the Kansas City Convention Center’s Ballroom Expansion project (LEED Silver). Recently she has been a consultant to the City of Kansas City, Missouri and Johnson County, Kansas to help them implement their LEED and sustainability policies.

Throughout architecture school Phaedra interned in the facility management department of Iowa State University and has never forgotten that without effective measurement and management a facility may never reach (or exceed) its designed potential. She believes that now more than ever facility managers have the power to not only manage valuable assets, but to contribute to an organization’s wealth.
